Spanberger approves remaking VCU Health board after failed redevelopment

Post Date:04/17/2026 10:18 AM
RRao"Gov. Abigail Spanberger has signed legislation that will redesign the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Board of Directors. The changes are a ripple effect from the health system's failed real estate deal in 2021.

The new law will remove the voting power of the VCU president, split the position of health system CEO into two jobs and reduce the number of board members.

VCU president Michael Rao said he welcomes the changes.

'I believe that our VCU Health board requires a chair who can be 100% devoted to the health system,' he said," reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
