Virginia passes bill to remake college governing boards
Post Date:03/06/2026 12:08 PM"Lawmakers in both chambers of the General Assembly have passed a bill to reimagine college governing boards and limit their political influence.
On Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, D-Chesterfield, cast a tiebreaking vote to approve a rewritten version of House Bill 1385, which would change how the legislature confirms board members and their duties once they begin to serve. The House already approved a previous version of the bill by a vote of 62-35.
The Senate's substitute bill incorporates a similar measure proposed by Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Charlottesville. The bill now goes back to the House to decide if it will accept the Senate's revisions.
College governing boards have become a political issue in the past year after the leaders of the University of Virginia and Virginia Military Institute departed their schools and the president at George Mason University was put under federal investigation. After Jim Ryan resigned as president of UVa, a Democratic-led committee refused to confirm a batch of nominations by then-Gov. Glenn Youngkin. A legal fight ensued, and the Supreme Court of Virginia ultimately let the refusals stand," reports Richmond Times-Dispatch.
