Judge suspends Trump's freeze on grants and loans, which sowed confusion in Va.
Late Tuesday afternoon, U.S. District Judge Loren L. AliKhan temporarily blocked the president’s action minutes before it was set to go into effect. The judge’s order pauses the freeze until Monday.
The Trump directive had raised questions about federal grants that support medical research at Virginia Commonwealth University and other public institutions; hospital care under Medicaid; public and nonprofit services to needy Virginians with low incomes; economic development projects in Manassas and Pittsylvania County that are partly funded under legislation signed by then-President Joe Biden; federal funding to build a vital railroad bridge across the Potomac River from Virginia into Washington, D.C.; and even disaster relief in Southwest Virginia, which Vice President JD Vance visited on Monday with Youngkin.
Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-9th, said in a statement that he supported 'prudent review' of federal spending that could be “implicated” by seven executive orders that Trump issued after his inauguration on Jan. 20.
'This temporary pause does not apply to every single federal assistance program, and any program that provides direct individual assistance is not subject to the temporary pause,' Griffith said," reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
