Private Virginia colleges urge support for tuition assistance grant thousands of students rely on

Post Date:01/10/2025 10:10 AM
VWesleyan"Parents of students at non-profit, private colleges and universities in Virginia are being urged to advocate for support and the growth of the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant, or VTAG.

The VTAG program started in 1972 — when the General Assembly approved a statewide referendum. It is administrated by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia for in-state students.

Students do not have to pay VTAG back or demonstrate a financial need.

'We make a concerted effort to have a grassroots campaign where our students, our families, our faculty, our staff are writing our representatives, writing the governor's office to tell them how important that program is and to keep its funding at its current level but also looking for those increases,' said Virginia Wesleyan Associate Vice President of Campus Life and Operational Management Jason Seward.

The Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia is advocating for the grant to increase to $6,000," reports 13 News Now.
