SCHEV Announces Agenda for October 21 Meeting

RICHMONDThe State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) will hold a regular business meeting on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The meeting will take place in SCHEV’s main conference room on the ninth floor of the James Monroe Building at 101 North 14th Street in Richmond, Virginia.

Following remarks from Dr. Richard Shurtz, President and CEO of Stratford University, the Council will discuss the report from the Ad HocAffordability Committee, which has been examining affordability and its relationship to issues of access and student success. The Committee’s report describes various factors that impact affordability and outlines strategies to preserve and improve the affordability of higher education in the Commonwealth

Council members will also take action on the final review of Eastern Virginia Medical School and discuss several amendment items from the 2008-10 systemwide budget, including base adequacy, faculty salaries, financial aid, and the role of private institutions in the Commonwealth’s nursing shortage. Additionally, the Council will take action on recommendations from the Restructuring Task Force. As part of its consent agenda, Council members will act on requests from two private postsecondary institutions seeking certification to operate in Virginia.

SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues. Agenda materials for the SCHEV meeting are available at
