In 2008, the U. S. Department of Education awarded funding to Virginia for the College Access Challenge Grant Program (CACGP). CACGP is a formula grant program designed to foster partnerships among federal, state and local government entities and philanthropic organizations to significantly increase the number of students who enter and remain in postsecondary education with an emphasis on students and families living below the poverty line.
Virginia’s program is designed to increase awareness a nd knowledge of educational opportunities after high school by providing important information to students and their families. Current initiatives include advising services for middle and high school students, information sessions on navigating the financial aid and college enrollment processes, counselor professional development, continuing development of the Virginia Wizard and continuation of the I am the One collateral campaign. These initiatives highlight the importance of education beyond high school and provide resources that reinforce the message that college is within reach for all Virginians.
