RICHMOND — The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) will hold its regularly scheduled meeting May 20-21 in Staunton, including a joint meeting with the leaders of Virginia’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities and remarks from Virginia Governor Ralph S. Northam.

The Council’s Academic Affairs, and Resources and Planning committees will meet May 20 beginning at 1:00 pm on the campus of Mary Baldwin University. Topics include certification for several private institutions, an updated program approval policy, delegation of the tuition moderation fund’s certification process to SCHEV staff and a proposed new program at The College of William & Mary.

In addition, the Council will act on a staff recommendation to add 25 new bachelor degree programs in teacher education at seven public institutions to help increase annual teacher production. The effort is part of a coordinated plan among SCHEV, the Virginia Department of Education, schools of education and the Governor's office to respond rapidly to the 2018 General Assembly legislation related to teacher shortages. According to Joe DeFilippo, SCHEV’s director of academic affairs and planning, “When these programs are running at full enrollment, they are projected to increase teacher production by more than 400 per year over current levels.”

At 3:00 p.m., Council will hold a joint meeting with the Private College Advisory Board, comprised of presidents of the private, not-for-profit colleges and universities in the Commonwealth. Governor Ralph S. Northam will discuss his priorities for higher education, particularly as they relate to private colleges.

The full Council will convene for its regular meeting at 9:00 a.m. on May 21, in Staunton. Pamela Fox, Mary Baldwin University's president, will present remarks.
