RICHMOND — Next week thousands of Virginia high school students will have the opportunity and extra guidance about how to apply to college.
During Virginia College Application Week, Nov. 14-18, participating students are encouraged to submit at least one college application. This year, 62 high schools in 33 districts across the Commonwealth are participating in this college-access program (see Resources, below).
“Students across Virginia are seeking educational opportunities beyond high school,” said Peter Blake, director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. “That’s why College Application Week is so important.
“From certificate to degree programs, colleges offer educational pathways that transform lives and communities,” Blake added. “Students across the Commonwealth can benefit from the one-on-one assistance that College Application Week provides.”
In Virginia, the secretary of education’s office, SCHEV, Educational Credit Management Corp. and the Council of Independent Colleges and Universities in Virginia are joining with higher-education institutions, principals, counselors, coordinators and volunteers to provide hands-on application assistance. Additional resources available to students during the school day include computer lab time, application-fee waivers and informational materials, making the college-application process more accessible to students with limited access to resources and advisers. Participating high schools have 50% or more of students eligible for free or reduced lunches.
As Governor Terry McAuliffe announced recently, the 1-2-3 Go! campaign is designed to guide senior high school students through the steps of 1) preparing 2) applying and 3) paying for college. Virginia College Application Week is part of step No. 2 in the initiative, assisting Virginia’s students and families in applying to college.
The Virginia Plan for Higher Education specifies college access and completion as among the top goals for the Commonwealth as it aims to be the best-educated state by 2030.
SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education, dedicated to making Virginia the best-educated state by 2030. For more information, contact Greg Weatherford, associate for communications and outreach, at (804) 786-2323 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
