SCHEV to Recommend Systemwide Higher Education Budget

RICHMOND — Following an Executive Committee meeting at 8:30 am on Tuesday, October 25, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) will hold its regular business meeting from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm in SCHEV’s main conference room on the ninth floor of the James Monroe Building at 101 North 14th Street in Richmond, Virginia.

Members will take action on recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly for operating, capital, and financial aid budgets for the 2012-14 biennium. Council’s actions will include initiatives to support college and university efforts to improve quality, expand access, increase degree attainment, and incentivize change and improvement.

Additionally, the Council will take action on agenda items considered during the Academic Affairs Committee meeting on Monday, October 24 at 2:30 pm in the SCHEV conference room. Committee members will consider a request from George Mason University to initiate the Commonwealth’s first Master of Engineering degree program in Geotechnical, Construction, and Structural Engineering. The Academic Affairs Committee will also take action on applications from four private postsecondary institutions seeking certification to operate in Virginia.

SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues. Agenda materials for the SCHEV meeting are available at http://www.schev.edu/council/AgendaBookIndex.asp.
