SCHEV Names Peter Blake as Interim Executive Director

RICHMOND — Members of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) have selected Peter A. Blake as the agencys new Interim Executive Director. A former Virginia Secretary of Education, Mr. Blake previously worked at SCHEV as an Associate Director overseeing higher education analyses in the areas of faculty and staff compensation, higher education funding policies, academic libraries, distance learning and instructional technology, and student financial aid. He left SCHEV in 1999 to serve as the Legislative Fiscal Analyst for the Virginia General Assemblys House Appropriations Committee.

The Council is extremely pleased that Mr. Blake has agreed to return to SCHEV to direct the agencys initiatives to help make Virginias colleges and universities affordable and accessible to all citizens, said Council Chair Susan Magill. He is a great fit for the position with his strong understanding of the agency itself, the legislature, and Virginias system of higher education. The Council members and staff welcome the experience and knowledge Mr. Blake brings to SCHEV.

Mr. Blake will step into his new role at SCHEV on April 1, 2011. He currently serves as the Vice Chancellor of Workforce Development Services for the Virginia Community College System, where he leads policy and budget development for state and federal workforce programs. Prior to serving as the Secretary of Education under former Virginia Governor Mark Warner, Mr. Blake was the Deputy Secretary of Education from 2002 to 2005.

In addition to his professional experience, Mr. Blake has served on various advisory committees, including the boards of the Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Association, the Richmond Public Library, the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation, and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Mr. Blake completed the Virginia Executive Institute and LEAD Virginia programs, as well as the Associates program through the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. He has a B.A. in History and an M.S. in Communications Management from Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Blake replaces SCHEVs Interim Director Andrew B. Fogarty, who began work at the agency in August 2010.

SCHEV is the Commonwealths coordinating body for Virginias system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues.
