SCHEV to Take Action on Five New Program Proposals at July Meeting
RICHMOND —The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) will hold its regular business meeting on Tuesday, July 17, from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm in SCHEV’s main conference room on the ninth floor of the James Monroe Building at 101 North 14th Street in Richmond, Virginia.
Following remarks from Beth Murphy, Director of the Richmond Campus of Bryant & Stratton, Council members will hear a presentation about the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) scholarship awards. In the coming months, SCHEV is awarding more than 1,000 scholarships and grants to GEAR UP students based on factors including financial need and academic performance.
Additionally, the Council will take action on agenda items considered during the Academic Affairs Committee meeting on Monday, July 16, at 2:30 pm in the SCHEV conference room. Committee members will consider five proposals for new academic degree programs from Christopher Newport University, George Mason University, and Virginia Tech. Among the programs to be discussed, Mason is proposing the creation of a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Creative Writing, which would be the first of its kind in the Commonwealth. The Academic Affairs Committee will also consider a request from the Institute for Statistics Education, which is seeking certification to operate in Virginia.
SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues. Agenda materials for the SCHEV meeting are available at http://www.schev.edu/council/AgendaBookIndex.asp.
