SCHEV Accepting Applications for
Doctoral Nursing Student Loan Program
RICHMOND —The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) is now accepting applications for the 2008 Virginia Doctoral Nursing Student Loan Assistance Repayment program, which provides loans for full-time students who have already been accepted, or are currently enrolled in, a doctoral nursing program in Virginia. Award amounts may be up to $25,000 per year for up to two years, and the loans do not have to be repaid if the recipient works as a faculty member at a nursing school in Virginia for two years of full-time teaching for every year of support received.
The program represents a partnership of the public and private doctoral-granting institutions, including George Mason University, Hampton University, the University of Virginia, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
“Our hope is that this funding program will assist in the recruitment and retention of new nursing faculty,” said Daniel J. LaVista, SCHEV’s executive director. “As outlined in the agency’s strategic plan for higher education, SCHEV is committed to alleviating the critical shortage of nurses in Virginia. This loan program benefits not only the graduate students who receive funding, but also the Commonwealth citizens who rely on nurses for medical assistance.”
The 2008 Virginia Doctoral Nursing Student Loan Assistance Repayment program application, which is available on the SCHEV web site at http://www.schev.edu/Students/forms/NursingLoanApp.pdf, must be submitted to SCHEV by April 15, 2008 at 3:00 p.m.
SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues. Agenda materials for the SCHEV meeting are available at www.schev.edu.
