James Alessio Named SCHEV’s
Director of Higher Education Restructuring
RICHMOND — Daniel LaVista, Executive Director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), today announced that James Alessio has been appointed as Director of Higher Education Restructuring effective immediately.
In his new role, Mr. Alessio will provide leadership for meeting SCHEV’s responsibilities to the Restructuring Act and related activities, assist in the development of the statewide strategic plan for higher education, guide the institutions’ development of their six-year plans, and oversee the certification of institutional responses to the educational goals contained in the Act.
“I am pleased that Jim is willing to help SCHEV and Virginia’s institutions of higher education manage the new opportunities and challenges posed by this important legislation,” says LaVista. “His knowledge of the Restructuring Act and his familiarity with the agency’s role make him an ideal candidate for this position.”
Mr. Alessio is currently the Senior Associate for Finance Policy at SCHEV and has worked previously at the agency in the areas of information systems, data management, research and financial aid. His past and current work at SCHEV is complemented by his experience as an administrator at Virginia Commonwealth University and an adjunct faculty member at John Tyler Community College, Virginia Commonwealth University, and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Mr. Alessio has a bachelor of science in mathematics from Loyola University of Chicago and a master of science in business from Virginia Commonwealth University.
SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues.
