SCHEV Announces Agenda for October 17 Meeting

RICHMOND — The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) will hold a regular business meeting on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Council’s main conference room on the ninth floor of the James Monroe Building in Richmond, Virginia.

SCHEV committees will meet prior to the regular business meeting. The Academic Affairs Committee will hold a meeting at 9:00 a.m. in the ninth floor main conference room. The Resources Committee will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Department of Education’s Jefferson Conference Room on the 22nd floor of the James Monroe Building. The Outreach Committee will meet at 11:00 a.m. in the ninth floor main conference room.

The Academic Affairs Committee will take action on three proposals for new degree programs from two public four-year institutions. The committee will also take action on guidelines for transfer, articulation, and dual admission to Commonwealth institutions, and will receive an update on No Child Left Behind Grants administered by the agency.

The Resources Committee will take action on the 2006-08 systemwide operating and capital outlay budget items, including base adequacy, faculty salaries, and undergraduate student financial aid.

The Outreach Committee will discuss progress towards the 2007 Outstanding Faculty Awards and several academic events being planned for the continued commemoration of SCHEV’s 50th anniversary.

During the regular business meeting, the Council will hear remarks from Dr. Terrance Suarez, President of Mountain Empire Community College. The Council will also hear an update on the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) program.

SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues.
