Joseph DeFilippo Named
SCHEV’s Director of Academic Affairs & Planning

RICHMOND — Daniel LaVista, Executive Director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), today announced that Joseph DeFilippo has been appointed as the agency’s Director of Academic Affairs & Planning effective December 1, 2006.

In his new role, Dr. DeFilippo will provide leadership and coordination for all system-wide academic activities, including the development of Virginia’s multi-year strategic plan for higher education, the Virginia Outstanding Faculty Awards program, institutional program approval, transfer and articulation, student competency assessments, changes of mission statement, and new instructional sites. He will also serve as liaison to the Council’s Academic Affairs Committee, chair regular meetings of institutional academic officers, and serve on state-level boards and leadership teams.

“Joe’s education and experience with the state system of higher education in New York will serve him well in his new capacity with SCHEV,” says Dr. LaVista. “We are excited to have a new perspective from someone so clearly well-versed in the challenging process of planning for and responding to systemwide needs at colleges and universities.”

Dr. DeFilippo currently serves as head of the Office of Academic Programs and Planning at the State University of New York (SUNY) System Administration, where he is responsible for the process of reviewing academic program proposals from 64 SUNY campuses and leading the system’s annual enrollment planning effort. His policy development work includes such activities as mission review, enrollment planning, academic integrity and general education. Previously he held teaching appointments in Classics at Grinnell College, Pomona College, The Ohio State University, Cornell University and The University of North Dakota. Dr. DeFilippo earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classics from Cornell University, as well as a masters and doctorate in Classics from Princeton University.

SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues.
