SCHEV Introduces “Advancing Virginia,”
A Strategic Plan for Higher Education

RICHMOND — Since the days of Thomas Jefferson, Virginia’s leaders have recognized that the future of higher education in the Commonwealth is truly the future of Virginia itself. With this rich history in mind, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) understands the importance of its legislative charge to create a six-year strategic plan for higher education in the Commonwealth.

SCHEV assembled a panel of the best and brightest minds, including college presidents and administrators, leaders of industry, legislators, community representatives, financial experts, and those on the cutting edge of academic innovation. The result is a comprehensive strategic plan for 2007-2013 with 12 goals that address three main areas: Access, Alignment, and Investment.

“Virginia’s colleges and universities are some of the best in the nation,” according to Whitt Clement, Vice Chair of SCHEV and Chair of SCHEV’s Strategic Planning Steering Committee. “This strategic plan will allow the Commonwealth to maintain that excellence and improve upon it by providing greater access to higher education for all Virginians.”

Accessibility, research, workforce needs, college readiness, and accountability are key features of the new strategic plan. “In this global economy, the pursuit of excellence is more important than ever,” said Governor Timothy Kaine. “The strategies outlined in this plan will enable Virginia’s institutions of higher education to better meet the needs of our students, our workforce, and the Commonwealth.”

The new six-year plan, entitled “Advancing Virginia: Access, Alignment, Investment,” also supports existing programs that have proven highly successful, such as the Virginia College Savings Program and the Virginia Higher Education Equipment Fund.

“This plan is a snapshot of the expectations we have for the future of higher education in Virginia.  Bringing it to life will enable us to serve students and the Commonwealth in significant ways,” said Daniel J. LaVista, Executive Director of SCHEV.

SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues.
