Kirsten Nelson Named SCHEV’s
Director of Communications and Government Relations
RICHMOND — Daniel LaVista, Executive Director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), today announced that Kirsten Nelson has been appointed as the agency’s Director of Communications and Government Relations effective January 3, 2007.
In her new role, Ms. Nelson is responsible for planning, developing and implementing the agency’s external communications programs, including state and federal relations with executive and legislative branch officials on policy, regulatory, and administrative matters. She will also oversee media relations, constituent affairs, and website management and development.
“Kirsten brings a strong background and interpersonal skills that will aid the continuing growth, development and contributions of the agency’s communications area,” says Dr. LaVista. “She and I have discussed her new responsibilities, including media management and website oversight, and I’m very confident that she is prepared to meet them.”
A graduate of Syracuse University, Kirsten previously worked as a Public Relations and Marketing Specialist with the City of Richmond Police Department, a position she has held since 2005. Prior to that position, she served for eight years as a news producer with Richmond’s WRIC-TV covering city, state and national news. Ms. Nelson also worked as a public affairs specialist with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and as a legislative reporter in Michigan at WLNS-TV.
SCHEV is the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for Virginia’s system of higher education. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information on Virginia colleges and universities on higher education issues.
