The Indiana College Network: Information and Service for Distance Education Students via WWW
By Nancy Millichap Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS) This paper details the development of the Indiana College Network, a cooperative venture of eight of Indiana's institutions of higher education to provide information on the distance learning courses and programs they offer. The piece describes a good model for how a system as a whole can present information on the distance learning offerings of its constituent members (it's done with an Internet web-site or through an 800 telephone number). However, it does not answer a crucial question: can the distance learner put together courses from different institutions to gain a desired degree from any one of them? The answer to this question is not self-evident through visiting the ICN web-site, either (www.icn.org), so it is presumed that the ICN does not function as an independent virtual university. |
