GEAR UP Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs
SCHEV: State Council of Higher Education for Virginia
Cohort: A group of students who are selected to be members of a six-year GEAR UP grant program
2000-2006 Cohort: GEAR UP students who started 7th grade at a participating school in 2000 and graduated high school in 2006 are members of this cohort. These students are currently enrolled in college and receiving a GEAR UP Virginia Scholarship.
2006-2012 Cohort: GEAR UP students who started 7th grade at a participating school in 2006 and will graduate high school in 2012 are members of this cohort. These students will be eligible for consideration for a GEAR UP Virginia Scholarship or Achievement Grant in 2012.
Postsecondary Education: Education beyond high school. This includes vocational and certification programs. GEAR UP Virginia also uses the word “college” to refer to any education beyond high school.
GEAR UP Virginia Team
Career Coach: Works with GEAR UP students to define their postsecondary education and career goals, administer career assessments, and provide additional support. These team members are employees of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and are based in the participating GEAR UP schools.
Data Coordinator: Compiles and enters all GEAR UP student participation information. These team members are employees of participating GEAR UP schools and are teachers, school guidance counselors, and/or administrative staff.
Regional Manager: Assist participating GEAR UP schools in different regions of Virginia with various aspects of the program. The regions are divided into Central, Southside, and Southwest. These team members are employees of SCHEV.
School Coordinator: Helps plan and implement the program and work with GEAR UP students within the participating schools. These team members are employees of participating schools and are teachers, school guidance counselors, and/or administrative staff.
SCHEV Team: State staff members that oversee the GEAR UP Virginia program and provide support to all GEAR UP Virginia team members.
